BIRCH, John Lindsey, F/L, DFC (144267, RAFVR*) - No.156 Squadron - Bar to Distinguished Flying Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 22 May 1945. Following citation from Flight, 5 July 1945.

This officer has always shown the utmost keenness for operational flying. Since the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross he has participated in many further missions throughout which he has shown great courage and tenacity. His aircraft has been in combat with enemy fighters on many occasions and he has always proved himself to be a skilful and determined air gunner.
