| 582 | 23/12/1944 | Koln | PB558 | Lancaster III | To 1028 Little Staughton. Damaged by flak while approaching the AP and soon afterward came under sustained fighter attack. During these engagements, F/S Watson RAAF maintained a steady stream of fire, continuing to do so even after his turret was hit and put out of action. W/O Anderson RAAF, realising his colleague was trapped, made his way to the rear of the Lancaster and using an axe managed to open the turret doors and pull F/S Watson to safety. Shortly after doing so all baled out over Allied held territory, returning to Little Staughton on 27th December. For their outstanding courage W/O Andersen and F/S Watson were awarded the DFC & DFm respectively. Sadly, F/S Watson was killed on 28 April 1945. |
