| 156 Squadron Mission Details
|
Target: Chemnitz
Mission Date: 14/02/1945
Mission Comments: 16 aircraft detailed for a night attack on CHEMNITZ in two waves, with a three hour interval. 9 aircraft attacked in the first wave in conditions of 10/10ths cloud. The marking was consequently very thin. Skymarking was resorted, but the bombing was rather scattered. Five aircraft were shot down on this raid. The second wave of 7 aircraft. The weather again hindered this attack. The Wanganui flares were the only markers seen and provided only a very meagre guide for bombing. All proceeded and returned.

Blind Marker. Task. CHEMNITZ (1st Attack). Target attacked at 2058 hrs from 18000 ft. As we ran in we saw some illuminating flares well concentrated and in the centre 1 TI Green on the ground. Our H2S was U/S so we bombed on the TI Green. After bombing, we saw more TI Green falling vertically. It was possible to see through the clouds and the first TI Green seemed to be between the A/P and the lake on North West of town. One photo attempted. |
