Personal Details:
Ernest was born at 54 Grafton Terrace, St Pancras in London. His father
was Augustus George Ambridge and mother Florence Elizabeth Ambridge
(nee Hudson).
Sgt Ambridge married Vera Burns
in Streatham, London, in October 1942.
According to the 156 Squadron
Operations Record Book (ORB) Sgt Ambridge was posted in from 35
Squadron on 17/06/1943, just over a month and four missions
later he was lost.
His final mission, to Essen, on the
25/7/1943 took off from Warboys at 22:21. Badly shot about over the
target by a night fighter, and then attacked for a second time by
Maj. Werner Streib, I./NJG1crashing 01:40 roughly 1 km S of
Nistelrode (Noord Brabant), 6 km SSE of Oss, Holland. Those who died
are buried in Eindhoven (Woensel) General Cemetery. Their average

There was only one survivor from the
crash, P/O K. Weaver who ended up in Stalag Luft L3, Sagan and
Belaria.
A close examination of his headstone
will reveal the correction of his age from 21 to 22. This was
undertaken by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission after this
error was proven to them by Diana Gluth.
